What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional therapy is a way of using food and supplements
to encourage the body’s natural healing.
It recognizes that each individual has unique
dietary and nutritional requirements. This is known as biochemical
individuality.
The stress and pace of modern life encourages the consumption
of foods that are of poor quality, depleted in nutrients and
often heavily
contaminated. Nutritional Therapy attempts to address these
imbalances.
It is a complementary therapy, which means it can work alongside
conventional medicine.
Our health is inextricably linked to what we eat. Addressing
the imbalances in our diet and
encouraging a more positive lifestyle inevitably leads to
a healthier body and mind.
What conditions can Nutritional Therapy treat?
Nutritional therapists work with a wide range of conditions
in both adults and children.
Some of the complaints that are commonly treated by nutritional
therapists are :
· Digestive disorders
· Weight problems
· High blood pressure
· High cholesterol
· Food allergies, intolerances or sensitivities
· Irritable bowel syndrome
· Other intestinal problems including bloating, diarrhoea andconstipation
· Arthritis and joint pain
· Hormonal disorders including PMS and menopausal problems
· Attention deficit disorders and hyperactivity in children
· Depression, anxiety and mood swings
· Hypothyroidism or low energy levels and fatigue
The Consultation
In order to be effective, a nutritional therapist requires
information about all aspects of your health and well being
including medical history, dietary history, family history,
digestion,
energy levels, exercise etc.
This helps the therapist discover if you have any problems
such as food allergies,
nutritional deficiencies, toxic overload or
general nutritional problems.
Besides asking questions, the therapist might suggest doing
tests such as hair mineral analysis, hormone tests or food
sensitivity tests in order to get a better understanding of
your current health status.
The therapist will suggest foods you should eat and foods
to be avoided. They may also recommend a specific type of
diet and
possible lifestyle modifications.
Supplements may be suggested to encourage your body to heal
itself.
You will be given a review date so that your progress can
be monitored and if necessary changes can be made to your
programme to encourage your body to continue healing.
