What is Chiropractic?
The concept of working with the spine to aid in improvinghealth
has its roots in ancient Greece. Chiropractic as a profession
has been with us for over 100 years.
Chiropractic is a system of healthcare that involves physically
working with the joints of the spine to improve nerve function.
Chiropractors locate and correct what are called vertebral
subluxations. These subluxations cause joint dysfunction and
interference with nerves resulting in a variety of symptoms
and structural problems. Chiropractors are vitalists. They
work with each individual, finding out what that person’s
body is doing to try to heal itself, and assist with the process.
Is Chiropractic safe?
Yes. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record over the
past 100 years, despite what some detractors may say. Doctors
of Chiropractic are trained to recognise serious conditions
outside their scope of practice, and when encountered, these
problems will be brought to the attention of the patient.
Who may benefit from Chiropractic?
Many people attend chiropractors due to symptoms they are
experiencing.
These include: back pain, sciatica, neck pain, headaches/migraines,
shoulder/arm pains, etc. which arise mainly due to past stresses.
Others come in for regular check-ups to help keep their bodies
functioning well. We all have pressures on us associated with
living in our world. Inherited traits, difficult births, accidents,
pollution, poor diets, sport, lack of exercise, pregnancy,
poor posture, heavy work, poor work habits, raising children,
and emotional upsets are some of the long list of stresses
we may experience in our lives.
Most people wait until their symptoms are significantly interfering
with their lives before seeing a chiropractor, this is not
the best approach to your health. Often these severe symptoms
are a sign that smaller problems have been ignored, leading
gradually, over a long period of time, to the present flare-up.
So, who should see a chiropractor? Due to the stresses we
will inevitably encounter in life, most everyone would do
well to get a spinal check-up. If no problems are found, great!
When subluxations are found, they are corrected, often relieving
symptoms as well as helping with the prevention of future
problems.
What happens during a chiropractic consultation?
After taking a thorough case history, the chiropractor carries
out a spinal examination.
This involves postural analysis and palpation of the spine,
as well as the relevant chiropractic, orthopaedic, neurological
and neurovascular tests. Problem areas are identified and
recommended actions explained to the patient. The chiropractor
will then adjust the spinal subluxations once the patient
agrees to it. The patient will then be given recommendations
regarding how to care for himself/herself over the coming
days. Further visits will usually be recommended and a general
guide as to the treatment schedule will be given. The entire
consultation visit will last approximately 30 minutes.
How should I feel after an adjustment? The reaction is individual
to the patient. Some people feel better, others show no immediate
change while still others may experience soreness following
the adjustments. The main indicator that things are going
well is the stabilisation of the spine, not simply the short-term
relief of symptoms. Fewer adjustments, then fewer visits are
needed, showing that true healing is taking place.
